This magnificent golden blonde Trappist beer hits the nose with touches of pepper, coriander and wheat. Dry to the taste, the palate delivers pepper, wheat and touches of white wine and white grapes in a dry package, creams and lemon also flow through. Finishes with light bitterness and hints of toffee along with a touch of orange peel and red apple in the aftertaste.
This fantastic Trappist Tripel was first brewed in 1966 but was released in its larger 750ml bottle, Cinq Cent, to celebrate the town of Chimay’s 500th anniversary. This celebratory special was designed to have qualities reminiscent of Champagne. Best served at 6 to 8°C.
Recommended with any Chimay cheese.
The Trappist brothers of Scormont Abbey, Chimay, have been brewing since 1862. Using their own natural spring water, which impart a unique flavour, the monks were the first monastery to use the official 'Trappist' designation, which safeguards the strict quality standards found in their drinks. As Cistercians of the Strict Observance, the monks live life in silence, totally withdrawn from the modern world. Over time they have developed their products to include their famous cheese as well as expanding the original single line of beer to a total of 7 or 8 when including special brews such as the rare Grand Reserve. Chimay is the most famous of all the Trappist beers and has led the way in having monastic products recognised for their high quality. The abbey uses its significant proceeds to support many charitable institutions and smaller monasteries, as well as employing over 30% of the local town.
