Abbey of Notre-Dame de Saint-Remy
Around the year 1230 the count of Rochefort founded hey Cistercian nunnery called Secours de Notre-Dame. Since then the monastery has been repeatedly destroyed by various Protestant armies. in 1595 the first Brewery was established, however, this did not stop the abbey from falling into ruin during the catastrophes of the 17th century. during the French revolutionary period the abbey was completely destroyed in around the year 1805 when it became a farm. The monks of Achel, another famous Trappist monastery which recently stopped producing Trappist beer, bought the farm with the abbey ruins in 1887 restoring them to their original use and raising new buildings. Although a new Brewery was soon established it would not be until 1952 that it would produce enough beer for it to go on sale. With 400 years of experience brewing, Rochefort Trappist beers are considered to be among the best Belgian beers in the world.
