Abbey of our Lady of Koningshoeven
The Trappist monks of the Abbey of our Lady of Koningshoeven live in one of the most picturesque of all of the Trappist monasteries. La Trappe’s motto, “Taste The Silence”, tells you everything you need to know of the monastic atmosphere. After their establishment in 1881, the first two beers the monks brewed came three years later; the proceeds of these early brewing experiments were used to build the famous neo-Gothic abbey. After decades of financial difficulties, the brewery started to thrive in the post-war years, after turning towards more sophisticated commercialisation. It was during this period that the La Trappe branding was developed in honour of the famous La Trappe monastery in Normandy. Today, the abbey uses the proceeds of its beers to support abbeys in Indonesia, Kenya and Uganda, alongside other charitable endeavours. Social responsibility and environmental sustainability has always been at the forefront of the abbey’s projects.
